Do polished concrete dining tables need special care?
Short answer: no. A polished concrete dining table from RockVine needs less care than a solid oak or walnut table, and a lot less than anything lacquered. The surface is sealed with an invisible protective coating that handles spills, heat, and daily family use without fuss.
That said, a polished concrete dining table is still a handmade, natural-material piece. Look after it properly and it'll last decades and look better with age. Here's exactly how.
Daily care for a polished concrete dining table
Day-to-day, there's almost nothing to do. Wipe the surface down with a soft damp cloth after meals. If you want to use a cleaner, use a mild pH-neutral one — washing-up liquid diluted in warm water is perfect. That's genuinely it for everyday care.
What to avoid:
- Abrasive scourers — steel wool, green scrubbies, anything that could score the sealer
- Acidic cleaners — lemon juice, vinegar, or descaling products can etch concrete surfaces over time
- Bleach-based cleaners — they can discolour the sealer and, over years, the concrete itself
Spills on a polished concrete dining table
Every polished concrete dining table we build is sealed against common spills — red wine, coffee, tea, oils, curry, balsamic. The sealer gives you a buffer, not a shield. Wipe spills up promptly (within an hour) and you'll see no mark at all.
If something's been left overnight and leaves a faint mark, 90% of the time a warm damp cloth with a drop of washing-up liquid will lift it. For stubborn spots, a tiny amount of baking soda paste worked gently with a soft cloth works well.
What we'd avoid leaving on the surface for extended periods:
- Red wine (lift within an hour)
- Citrus juice and vinegar-based dressings (acidic)
- Strong curries with turmeric (the pigment is aggressive)
- Beetroot juice (strong natural dye)
Nothing here is a disaster — it's just the same sensible approach you'd take with any quality dining surface.
Heat and polished concrete
Concrete itself is extremely heat-resistant — it's fire-rated for a reason. But the surface sealer has its limits. Never put an extremely hot pan, dish, or tray directly onto your polished concrete dining table. A trivet, chopping board, or simple cloth between the dish and the surface is enough to protect the sealer.
Coffee cups and teapots are fine — the heat transfer is slow and low. It's the 200°C+ pan straight from the oven that'll cause a problem.
Scratches on a polished concrete dining table
Polished concrete is harder than most people expect but it's not indestructible. Cutlery, plates, and ceramic tableware won't scratch it in normal use. What can scratch it: dragging heavy, sharp, or abrasive objects across the surface. Think metal tool boxes, pottery with unglazed bases, or a child's toy car with a sharp corner.
If you do get a minor scratch, two things to know:
- Most scratches are in the sealer, not the concrete. They can often be buffed out with a soft cloth and a little concrete sealer polish.
- Genuine scratches in the concrete itself are rare with normal use. If it happens, we can often repair them in situ during a service visit.
The broader point: any marks that build up over years become part of the table's character. A polished concrete dining table is meant to live in a real home, not sit in a showroom.
Re-sealing a polished concrete dining table
The sealer on a RockVine polished concrete dining table is designed to last 5–10 years with normal use before any attention is needed. Every table comes with aftercare guidance and, for customers who want it, we offer a re-seal service where we come to you and refresh the surface.
Signs it might need a re-seal:
- Water no longer beads on the surface (it soaks in faster)
- Small surface marks that used to wipe off now persist
- The finish looks duller in certain areas under direct light
None of this is urgent — it's maintenance, not repair. Most customers go 7–8 years between re-seals.
Outdoor use and temperature changes
RockVine polished concrete dining tables are built for indoor use. The micro-cement and sealer combination isn't designed for outdoor UV exposure, rain, or freezing temperatures. If you want a concrete dining table for a covered outdoor space, get in touch — we build specific outdoor variants with different sealers and base specifications.
When to call us
If anything ever seems off — a mark you can't lift, a hairline crack, a loose base fixing — just get in touch. Every RockVine polished concrete dining table is guaranteed, and most minor issues can be resolved in a single visit.
The honest summary
Caring for a polished concrete dining table is genuinely easy. Wipe it down. Don't leave acid on it overnight. Use a trivet for very hot pans. That's 95% of everything you need to know.
A well-looked-after polished concrete dining table will still look brilliant in 20 years. That's the point of buying one.
