Bespoke clear resin river dining tables handmade in the UK. Live-edge timber slabs, crystal-clear epoxy resin and structural steel bases — built to order in our Stockport workshop.
A resin river table combines a solid live-edge timber slab with a river of epoxy resin running through its centre. In a clear resin river table, that resin is crystal-clear — allowing the natural grain, colour and texture of the timber to show through the resin without interference.
The effect is striking and immersive. The clear resin appears almost liquid — you can see into it and through it to the timber below. Unlike coloured or tinted resin, clear epoxy puts the timber completely at the centre of the design, with the resin serving as a window into the slab rather than a design feature in its own right.
At RockVine, we cast our resin river sections in multiple pours to eliminate bubbles and ensure full optical clarity across the entire river. The result is glass-like, stable and completely food-safe.
Coloured resin is a bold choice. Clear is a considered one. Here's why many of our clients choose crystal-clear epoxy for their resin river table.
Both are valid choices — the right one depends on what you want the resin to do in your table. Here's a straightforward comparison to help you decide.
| Clear Resin (Crystal) | Coloured / Tinted Resin | |
|---|---|---|
| Aesthetic Focus | Timber is the hero | Resin is the feature |
| Timelessness | Enduring | Trend-dependent |
| Depth Effect | Maximum — see into river | Visual depth, less transparency |
| Interior Flexibility | Works with anything | Must complement colour scheme |
| Timber Visibility | Fully visible through resin | Partially obscured |
| Bold Statement | Refined, understated | Maximum visual impact |
The timber slab is everything in a clear resin river table. Because the resin is transparent, the full character of the wood — its grain, figure, colour and natural imperfections — becomes the centrepiece of the table.
Clear resin works best with timber that has genuine character to show off. Here are the species we recommend most often for clear river builds.
Rich golden tones and pronounced grain. Warm and timeless — one of our most popular choices for clear resin builds.
Deep chocolate tones and a fine, straight grain. Spectacular through clear resin — the contrast between timber and river is exceptional.
Wild, figured grain with swirling patterns. Clear resin lets every curl and figure show — a dramatic combination.
Ash, elm, cedar and more — available subject to stock. Tell us what you're drawn to and we'll advise on availability.
A clear resin river table requires patience and precision at every stage. The clarity of the finished resin is a direct result of how carefully each pour is handled.
Kiln-dried slab selected and confirmed with you. The live edge is cleaned and the slab is milled flat and to the correct thickness using our CNC and wide-drum sander.
The river channel is cut or formed in the slab. The channel edges and any natural voids are sealed to prevent the resin from absorbing into the timber.
Clear epoxy is poured in multiple stages to prevent overheating and eliminate bubbles. Each pour is left to cure fully before the next. This is what achieves optical clarity throughout the depth of the river.
The completed top is sanded flat across timber and resin, then finished to your chosen level — oil, satin lacquer or high gloss polished finish.
Steel base fabricated and powder coated in-house. White-glove delivery and installation by our own team — no couriers.
Clear epoxy resin is highly durable once fully cured. With routine care, the resin river will remain crystal-clear and the timber will look exceptional for decades.
The sealed surface is moisture-resistant. Wipe spills as they happen — particularly red wine, coffee and acidic liquids which can dull the finish over time.
UV light can yellow clear resin over time. We use UV-stable epoxy to minimise this, but positioning away from direct sustained sunlight helps maintain clarity long-term.
Don't place very hot pans directly on the resin surface. Use trivets for hot items. The resin handles everyday heat well but prolonged extreme heat can cause surface marking.
If your timber has an oil finish, re-oil every two to three years to keep it nourished and looking its best. The resin river requires no treatment — just clean.
Clear resin is one option. Here's where to go next if you're still exploring.
Standard epoxy resin can yellow with UV exposure over time. We use UV-stable, high-quality epoxy systems specifically formulated to resist yellowing. Positioning your table away from prolonged direct sunlight also helps significantly.
Our resin is chosen for long-term clarity. We've been making resin river tables for over a decade and have seen our early builds hold their clarity well.
Yes. Once fully cured, our epoxy resin is extremely rigid and hard-wearing — comparable in surface hardness to many hardwoods. It won't flex or deform under normal dining use.
The structural integrity of the table comes from the timber and steel base working together, with the resin bonded into the river channel. The result is a composite structure that is exceptionally strong.
Resin can be scratched by sharp objects just like any surface — timber, ceramic or glass. Light surface marks can generally be buffed out. For deeper scratches, the surface can be refinished by a professional.
For daily dining use with normal care, scratching is rarely a practical issue. We haven't had significant complaints from customers using their tables as everyday dining furniture.
The river width is largely determined by the timber slab configuration — two slabs with a river running between them. Rivers typically range from 50mm to 200mm+ depending on the slab design and your preference.
Very wide rivers require more careful pouring technique to maintain clarity. We'll advise on what's achievable based on your chosen slab and brief.
Yes — we'd encourage a showroom visit to see resin river tables in person before committing. You can see the clarity of the resin, the depth effect and how it interacts with different timber species in real light.
Our Stockport showroom is open by appointment. Weekend visits are available. Contact us to book.
Tell us your timber preference, size and base style and we'll come back with options, slab availability and a fixed price. No obligation.
